Combined, human trafficking and domestic violence throughout the United States is a huge problem. Human trafficking doesn’t have to be related to domestic violence; domestic violence in itself is a significant problem.I recently spent a week at the United States border, where human trafficking is a huge business—so much so that everyone knows not to go out at night. It’s a business where they are trafficking people from one place to another, and along the way they are bruising or hurting those people in one way or another.
The Victims and Perpetrators
Most people think of victims as women and children, but anyone can be a victim of human trafficking, just like anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. Most of the people who show up at my door are men and male children. For whatever reason, many who come to me are young men, ranging from 15 to 21 years old.
In both domestic violence and human trafficking cases, it is very common for the victims to have suffered multiple abuses, such as sexual assault or partner violence. In fact, the term “cycle of violence” refers to situations where the victim is suffering domestic violence at the hands of their parents or partner and are somehow able to free themselves from that relationship. However, it is also very common for victims to enter different relationships within which the same dynamic of violence exists. As a result, they become a victim many times over at the hands of their loved one.

Just as anyone can become the victim of human trafficking or domestic violence, anyone can be the perpetrator of these crimes. Generally, these perpetrators value money over human life, have no regard for the pain they are inflicting on others, and are themselves in a domestic violence situation.

Both the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and the Trafficking Victims Reauthorization Act provide protection for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. For instance, they allow an undocumented victim to apply for relief, such as through a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) or T-visa petition. In addition, they provide a wide range of protections for individuals who have committed certain crimes, and allow for one to use the fact of victimization as a defense in certain criminal proceedings.
